Siderite. Siderite is an iron carbonate, composition FeCO3. It is a member of the Carbonate mineral group. Both Mn2+ and Mg2+ substitute for Fe and a solid solution exists between siderite, rhodochrosite (MnCO3) and magnesite (MgCO3).

After heavy firing, siderite and ankerite becomes magnetic, dolomite and calcite does not. If a carbonatic sample is wetted with a weak acid solution of K 3 Fe(CN) 6 , some carbonates gets a blue color (Turnbulls blue) : calcite none, dolomite none, ankerite light blue, siderite dark blue.
